Frequently Asked Questions
What is the enrollment process?/How does the waitlist work?
The school's enrollment process follows a well-organized chronological order, ensuring fairness and transparency. It all starts with completing and paying for the application, which secures a spot on the waitlist. Priority is granted to returning students and their siblings, recognizing the value of continuity in education. In January of each year, pre-registration opens for returning families, allowing them to secure their places for the upcoming academic year. After this phase, any remaining available spaces are offered to families on the waitlist in February, with siblings taking precedence. This careful allocation process ensures that as many families as possible can benefit from the school's offerings. In February, families receive notification of their enrollment status, and they are then encouraged to submit their registration package for the upcoming year's enrollment. This process sets the stage for a smooth and hassle-free September enrollment.
What is the ratio of teacher to children at the center?
The licensed childcare ratio for this age group is 8 children to 1 teacher. In a group of 25 children, there are 2 Early Childhood Education (ECE) qualified teachers and 1 Early Childhood Education Assistant (ECEA) qualified teacher. This staffing arrangement ensures that the appropriate level of supervision and care is provided to meet the needs of the children in the program.
What is the expectation for communication between families and LSM?
We maintain open and transparent communication through various channels to ensure that families and staff stay informed and connected. Our communication avenues include newsletters to keep you updated on important information. We also have an open-door policy, which we kindly request be exercised at appropriate times.
If my child is 30 months at the start of an academic year (September), can they enroll in the program?
The center has a specific enrollment policy for kids aged 2.5 to 3 years, where there are only two spots available for this age group. Initially, these spots are given to children aged 2.5 years, and once they turn 3, the spots become open for other 2.5-year-olds. However, these two spots can only be offered when children currently in the program leave or graduate, thus creating an opening among the total of 25 allocated spots. This system ensures that children within the same age group have equal opportunities for enrollment. If at any time there is a vacancy within the total of 25 spots, it is promptly offered to the next person on the waitlist. This process ensures that any available spaces are efficiently filled and provides families on the waitlist with a fair chance to secure enrollment throughout the year.
How does LSM handle conflict between children?
In addressing unacceptable behavior, we employ a range of strategies that prioritize respect and positive guidance. These methods include respectfully gaining a child's attention, using proximity and gentle touch, offering reminders, acknowledging their feelings, and using distraction and redirection when appropriate. We also emphasize modeling problem-solving skills, presenting appropriate choices, and applying natural and logical consequences. In some instances, when necessary for the child's safety or well-being, we may temporarily relocate them to a quiet area within the classroom, away from the challenging situation. This is always done with the support and guidance of an adult and is intended as a positive learning experience, never as a form of punishment. Once the child is ready, they will rejoin the group. Furthermore, we provide opportunities for children to make amends and learn from their actions. For a more detailed understanding of how we support children, please refer to our parent handbook. These methods collectively create a nurturing and constructive environment for addressing and resolving challenging behaviors.
Must my child be toilet trained?
For our program to operate smoothly, it is important that all children are toilet trained before joining. However, we do recognize that preschool-age children are in the process of mastering toilet independence and may occasionally have accidents. We understand that some children are still developing their toileting skills, and we are here to provide assistance when needed. However, it's crucial for parents to actively work on their children's toileting skills at home. We appreciate your cooperation in helping your child achieve this important milestone.
When will I be provided an update on my position on the waitlist?
When a vacancy arises, we aim to provide a 30-day notice whenever possible. If you are offered a spot, you have several options: you can choose to withdraw, wait for another spot to become available, or opt to be placed on the waitlist for the following academic year. However, if a spot is not offered to those on the waitlist, they will automatically be moved to the waitlist for the next academic year. The exception to this is when children age out of childcare age, in which case families will be informed that their children will not be able to secure a spot in the center. This process ensures that families are informed and have options when it comes to enrollment opportunities.
What if my child doesn't nap during rest time?
We offer a full day program, running from 7:30 am to 5:00 pm, to accommodate various family schedules. During this time, we provide rest opportunities for children who may need to rest or take a nap to ensure their well-being and comfort. For those children who do not require rest, we offer a quiet time as an alternative, providing a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere to engage in activities or simply unwind. This flexibility in our daily schedule caters to the individual needs and preferences of the children under our care.
